While the Ciro Coffee Academy, along with other key industry stakeholders, plays a significant role in the local coffee industry, the Speciality Coffee Association (SCA) sits at the very heart of the international coffee education community. A non-profit membership association, the SCA was established in London in 1998 by a group of coffee connoisseurs as a platform for like-minded individuals to share their knowledge and experience with one another.
With a network spanning more than 90 countries, and now available in South Africa through the Ciro Coffee Academy, the SCA is focused on inspiring coffee excellence.
Innovation, education, research and communication inform the association’s vision – to educate the coffee consumer, to benefit the coffee supplier and to ensure the worldwide sustainability of the coffee industry.
Not only does the Ciro Coffee Academy align with the SCA’s vision and pure passion for the coffee industry, it also aims to be the authority on delivering coffee excellence at a local level. SCA accreditation and the incorporation of its coffee training qualifications, some of the most advanced and respected in the world, was an obvious and natural progression for Ciro.
The SCA’s Coffee Diploma System (CDS) comprises six different modules, each with three levels of qualification (Foundation, Intermediate, and Professional – apart from Introduction to Coffee which is just one level). This system has been developed through years of scientific research in the world of coffee. With the purpose of improving coffee standards, through knowledge and education, the Coffee Diploma System allows individuals to choose the training path best suited to them. The courses are conducted by Authorised SCA Trainers (ASTs), licensed to deliver the courses and certifications in the CDS modules, and all written and practical examinations are audited by the SCA. The Ciro Coffee Academy introduced The Coffee Diploma System to all their training centres in October 2016, along with nine local Authorised SCA Trainers.
