The Westin Cape Town held its inaugural in-house Barista, Bartender & Chef Competition supported by Ciro & Lavazza. The purpose of which is to put new talent within the group to the test in a fun low-pressure competition.
Timothy Krynauw representing Ciro attended in order to assist with the format and judging for all three categories. As part of the Barista competition format, the contestants had to prepare one espresso and one signature drink. The signature drink could be any creation; the only catch was that no alcohol was allowed. Five Barista’s took part in this nail biting competition in order to determine who would come out ahead of the competition.
As part of the Bartender Competition format, bartenders had to produce their best version of an Old Fashioned Cocktail and a Signature Cocktail that had to include Malibu. We had six bartenders compete, this time with slightly more alcohol involved. As part of the Chef Competition format, Seven chefs entered, they had to provide one canapé that needed to be paired with a Sparkling Brut wine, and one main course dish that had to incorporate ostrich, polenta and beetroot. It also had to pair well with a red wine provided.
Dishes and drinks were judged on visual appearance, creativity, technique and most importantly taste. The Westin hopes that this round of competition will kick off an annual event that will grow to accommodate more properties in the group.
Congratulations to all the contestants. The winners were:
